UK Theory Test

The UK Theory Test is the first step toward getting your full driving licence in the United Kingdom. It’s designed to make sure you understand the rules of the road, can recognise hazards, and know how to drive safely before you get behind the wheel for your practical test.

What Is the UK Theory Test?

The theory test is managed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and is required before you can book your practical driving test. It applies to learner drivers of cars, motorcycles, and other vehicle categories.

What Does the Test Include?

Multiple-Choice Questions

You’ll answer questions about road signs, driving laws, safety procedures, and best driving practices. These questions are based on the official resources from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

There are 50 questions total.

You must answer at least 43 correctly to pass — that’s 86 %.

Hazard Perception Test

You’ll watch video clips of real-life driving scenarios and identify developing hazards. This section tests your ability to spot potential dangers early and respond appropriately.

The test includes 14 video clips showing developing hazards.

You need a score of 44 out of 75 to pass this section.

You must pass both sections in the theory test in the same session to pass.

Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you’ll have to pass the theory test again.

Why Is It Important?

The UK Theory Test ensures that all new drivers have a solid understanding of:

The Highway Code

Road signs and markings

Safe driving techniques

Legal responsibilities on the road

Building this knowledge not only helps you pass your test but also prepares you for a lifetime of safe driving.
